I can’t remember the username [ update , !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ] , but I am 99% sure this belongs to someone here . In any case, PSA: manual awd bmw wagon for sale, lots of work done to make it a reliable DD. I have no affiliation with the owner, but I am a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! of the E46 325xi 5-speed wagon. I have little doubt this would be a good car for the money.

eh, I think it was like that when the current owner bought it. He did a ton of work, probably didn’t care about that detail haha

I agree, considering the work done, it’s a good winter car.

I can’t remember who it was either but at the time I was very interested in purchasing it. I still am but I’m also trying to save for some other priorities now. I still may go for it but I doubt it will be around long

Who knows, if he gets a bunch of lowballers maybe he’ll keep it through the winter. I wouldn’t sell for much less if I were him.

It lost about 1/4 of a quart in the 1500mi I’ve driven it, so it’s not a huge leak

That’s... not a SMALL leak... Not huge, but anything that leaks more than my pickup is a bit alarming impressive.

Seems like I need a reset of what’s reasonable oil loss, having been driving E46 wagons for a decade. I saw that and thought, “meh”

Depends on if it’s on the ground or not. I don’t have a shroud so all drops go right on my garage floor. 10 drops looks like a damned lake. But It’s seldom enough loss to warrant adding a quart between oil changes unless. So I’m just imagining, on this E46, a full quart missing every 6k miles/oil change. It sounds like a lot on the ground to me, but what do I know

That’s true, I’m not seeing much on the ground if any. At 175k I probably burn a fair amount.

Holy shit! That is almost exactly what I have been looking for. Still kinda rather have an Allroad.

Take the allroad and remove the shoehorned-in engine, replace it with an n/a straight six found in a zillion other cars, give it normal suspension, and rear-biased awd. I mean....

If by ‘hand tools’ you mean ‘cash money’ then yes. Yes, you could buy that E46 and drive it home in a weekend.

Sounds so much worse when you say it’s a quart on the ground over a 6k mile change. Gotta think positively, most of that will be strewn across the landscape if you drive it.

Wait, that sounds worse. Now I feel like an eco terrorist.

I may very well end up keeping it. I like it. I don’t have to sell it, it costs me next to nothing per month to have it if you average out the registration and insurance over the year. Plus, it’s not in the way. I put it up for sale just to see what offers I’d get. If someone wants to pay me a fair price they are welcome to have it, or even better if someone offers me something interesting. Haven’t seen much of either, although the W210 Benz, Volvo C70 and Miata were all tempting.
It’ll probably end up sticking around and once it warms up I’ll drop the differential, axles, steering rack and seemingly the rest of the underbody to fix the leak, at which point I’ll start getting into the “While I’m in there” stuff and who knows where it’ll end up.

It’s not in the way, so my motivation to deal with crappy CL emails is low.

Man, your garage setup is so ideal.

Yeah for the $1,500 or whatever you might get, you’d have a hard time doing better for the money. It’s a great car and you’ve sorted a good portion of its known issues...

Thanks. We lived in the country until early 2017. I did not want to live in a neighborhood, but it was better for the family if we did. The compromise was I got to build my garage.

I just pulled the ad down. I’m 0 for 6 on people actually showing up when they say they are, so screw it. I’ ll keep it for a bit, maybe relist it in a month or so when people start getting their tax returns and have extra cash.

Maybe I’ m too honest. I put it all out there in the ad, and when the guy emailed me to say he has 2 young kids, etc etc etc and this would be his only transportation I told him he probably didn’t want an old BMW. He asked what I meant, and I told him that the car has been reliable for me since doing all the work to it, but old BMWs are fairly needy and he’d probably be better off with something Japanese or American.

I’d say at this point it has a 50% chance of sticking around. I’d really rather sell it, but when the hassle is more than the car is worth to me, my motivation is non existent.

I do feel bad for someone who is trolling Craigslist for reliable transportation for his kids in winter, for under $2k. And who doesn’t know anything about these cars.

I’ve used my E46 as reliable kid transportation for years now; we do have a third car now, but didn’t always. That said, I know these cars VERY well, I can do a lot myself (though don’t have a garage like yours) and have a trusted indy shop I can go to easily.

That’s super annoying about people no-showing. I’d do the same as you.

I say, finish up the nagging issues, detail it and list it on Bring a Trailer haha they seem to have a thing for manual bmw wagons over there.

I just can’t sell it to someone who opens with how they can’t afford more than $1500 because of their kids and having to move. I’m fortunate to have a great job and wife that let me afford toy cars, but it took a LONG time to get here and I remember the days when something breaking would be a hardship and I can’t sell this to someone in that place. I don’t think it’d leave him stranded or give any real issues but it doesn’t sound like a good idea for him.

Sigh... Oh well. The right person will come around or I’ll just keep enjoying it.
